John Slattery: An Open Letter to Science

Dear Science,

This is not an easy letter to write. You know I love you very much, and I’ve always been a huge fan of yours. But this is getting ridiculous, Science. It’s 2013.

I want you to know that I am not writing this letter from the moon right now. I want you acutely aware of that fact, Science, just in case you weren’t sure. I am not writing this from a robot-proof bunker deep beneath the Earth’s crust, or from the captain’s chair aboard my starship. This letter is being composed on my four-year-old laptop, aboard the U.S.S “my living room reclining chair.”

I don’t mean to pressure you, but we are way behind schedule here. Yes, I know you’re working very hard, and sure, you’ve been doing some great things. But seriously? Where’s my flying car? Where’s my immortality pill, my moonbase, my affordable jetpack? Is it not 2013? Do I have my dates mixed up? Because if it’s 2013, this crap should all be old news.

We were supposed to have robots by now. You know that, right? Siri and my Keurig don’t count. I’m talking reliable, friendly robot butlers. They were supposed to be here. Look around you, Science. Do you see any friendly robot butlers? Because I don’t.

We have the Roomba. That’s it. The Roomba is not exciting. It doesn’t talk, it doesn’t fetch, it doesn’t plot mankind’s demise. It just get’s stuck in the same corner under my couch every day and revs its little engine until I save it or the battery dies. This is not acceptable.

Seriously, Science. Where are the robots? Why am I still bathing myself? Why am I still using my own hands to turn on my house lights? Why am I still physically lifting a fork to my mouth in order to eat food? Can we please get the ball rolling here?

Maybe I’m focusing too much on the negatives. I hear your latest Mars rover is doing well. That’s great to hear, congratulations. Honestly, very impressive stuff, Science. But if it were up to me, I’d be teleporting to Mars to get pizza on my lunch break.

My co-workers and I would be standing around the hovering watercooler, and I’d say, “Anybody in the mood for a moon slice?” And they’d say “Nah, I’m not feeling thin crust, let’s make a quick run to Mars.” This is literally all that I think about, Science. I get an incredibly small amount of work done.

Listen. I know I’m being a bit harsh. But is it really too much to ask for a little bit more future in my present? I’ll accept a lack of time machines, but you have to give me something. Brain chips, instantaneous limb regeneration, a sentient refrigerator; anything.

Just help me out, Science. Throw me a bone. Make it a hologram if you want.

With love,

Me

The 4-Year-Old Boy Who Stood Up to Al-Qaeda and Saved His Family

A 4-year-old British boy Elliott Prior with his mother and sister went shopping in a weekend, but things turned into an unexpected nightmare when terrorists with “links” to Al-Qaeda staged a deadly attack in Nairobi’s Westgate shopping centre, according to reports.

As he witnessed his mother shot in the leg with an AK47, the boy stood up to the attackers.

“You’re a bad man, let us leave,” the 4-year-old boy child shouted to the terrorist.

During their escape, the children’s mother, Amber, managed to take two more children with her outside the crime scene. The Independent reports that one of them was a 12-year-old boy who was injured and whose mother had been shot dead during the attack.

John Hall from The Independent reports that the group of terrorists asked if any children were in the mall and when Amber yelled out that there were, the terrorists approached her and let her family leave. “As the group turned to leave, the gunman allegedly called after them saying the jihadists only wanted to kill Kenyans and Americans, not Britons, pleaded with Amber to convert to Islam and begged, “Please forgive me, we are not monsters,” Hall reports.

As of Tuesday, the death toll of the terrorist attack was at 69 civilians, while 65 people remain hospitalized. While the world is still struggling to come to terms with the amount of human suffering as a result of the attack, it’s comforting to hear at least one story of heroism resilience, and more importantly, survival.

John McCain’s Response To Vladimir Putin’s Op-Ed

Russians deserve better than Putin
By Senator John McCain
September 19, 2013

When Pravda.ru editor, Dmitry Sudakov, offered to publish my commentary, he referred to me as “an active anti-Russian politician for many years.” I’m sure that isn’t the first time Russians have heard me characterized as their antagonist. Since my purpose here is to dispel falsehoods used by Russia’s rulers to perpetuate their power and excuse their corruption, let me begin with that untruth. I am not anti-Russian. I am pro-Russian, more pro-Russian than the regime that misrules you today.

AP963540527622

I make that claim because I respect your dignity and your right to self-determination. I believe you should live according to the dictates of your conscience, not your government. I believe you deserve the opportunity to improve your lives in an economy that is built to last and benefits the many, not just the powerful few. You should be governed by a rule of law that is clear, consistently and impartially enforced and just. I make that claim because I believe the Russian people, no less than Americans, are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A Russian citizen could not publish a testament like the one I just offered. President Putin and his associates do not believe in these values. They don’t respect your dignity or accept your authority over them. They punish dissent and imprison opponents. They rig your elections. They control your media. They harass, threaten, and banish organizations that defend your right to self-governance. To perpetuate their power they foster rampant corruption in your courts and your economy and terrorize and even assassinate journalists who try to expose their corruption.

They write laws to codify bigotry against people whose sexual orientation they condemn. They throw the members of a punk rock band in jail for the crime of being provocative and vulgar and for having the audacity to protest President Putin’s rule.

Sergei Magnistky wasn’t a human rights activist. He was an accountant at a Moscow law firm. He was an ordinary Russian who did an extraordinary thing. He exposed one of the largest state thefts of private assets in Russian history. He cared about the rule of law and believed no one should be above it. For his beliefs and his courage, he was held in Butyrka prison without trial, where he was beaten, became ill and died. After his death, he was given a show trial reminiscent of the Stalin-era and was, of course, found guilty. That wasn’t only a crime against Sergei Magnitsky. It was a crime against the Russian people and your right to an honest government – a government worthy of Sergei Magnistky and of you.

President Putin claims his purpose is to restore Russia to greatness at home and among the nations of the world. But by what measure has he restored your greatness? He has given you an economy that is based almost entirely on a few natural resources that will rise and fall with those commodities. Its riches will not last. And, while they do, they will be mostly in the possession of the corrupt and powerful few. Capital is fleeing Russia, which – lacking rule of law and a broad-based economy – is considered too risky for investment and entrepreneurism. He has given you a political system that is sustained by corruption and repression and isn’t strong enough to tolerate dissent.

How has he strengthened Russia’s international stature? By allying Russia with some of the world’s most offensive and threatening tyrannies. By supporting a Syrian regime that is murdering tens of thousands of its own people to remain in power and by blocking the United Nations from even condemning its atrocities. By refusing to consider the massacre of innocents, the plight of millions of refugees, the growing prospect of a conflagration that engulfs other countries in its flames an appropriate subject for the world’s attention. He is not enhancing Russia’s global reputation. He is destroying it. He has made her a friend to tyrants and an enemy to the oppressed, and untrusted by nations that seek to build a safer, more peaceful and prosperous world.

President Putin doesn’t believe in these values because he doesn’t believe in you. He doesn’t believe that human nature at liberty can rise above its weaknesses and build just, peaceful, prosperous societies. Or, at least, he doesn’t believe Russians can. So he rules by using those weaknesses, by corruption, repression and violence. He rules for himself, not you.

I do believe in you. I believe in your capacity for self-government and your desire for justice and opportunity. I believe in the greatness of the Russian people, who suffered enormously and fought bravely against terrible adversity to save your nation. I believe in your right to make a civilization worthy of your dreams and sacrifices. When I criticize your government, it is not because I am anti-Russian. It is because I believe you deserve a government that believes in you and answers to you. And, I long for the day when you have it.

On Good People and Good Deeds

By VIC LEMUEL CAJURAO

A science teacher once asked her class,

“If you were given the chance to invent anything, what would you create that would help the world?”

The whole class clamored with enthusiastic answers such as making artificial ozone layers, cloning animals, reconstructing coral reefs, filtering air pollution, and reversing the effects of mining.

After all the students were given the chance to say their own ideas, the teacher finally said

“You know what I would invent?”

The class listened in anticipation.

“I’d invent a PILL that makes anyone who takes it GOOD”

The world today is faced with an overwhelming list of problems spanning from poverty to racial discrimination, geo-political conflicts, and environmental degradation. Over the millennia, while there are significant efforts to resolve these conflicts, we can still temporarily admit that we haven’t reached anything yet with these endeavors. Poverty is still significant;people are still displaced by war; and there are still people oppressed by people in power. In light these continually worsening problems, we can’t help but ask questions. Where are we heading? What have we been doing? What have we not done yet? Is there really a solution?

The science teacher’s answer to her question suggests that initially, the reason why conflicts and problems exist is because there are BAD people. What/who are these BAD people?People who are selfish, hungry for power and recognition, attached to money and material wealth, or in short, people. Needless to say, apathy is the worst societal flaw that we humans have developed over the progress of economy and technology. While our material choices expand through timeless innovations, our care for others narrows to the people close to us, or worse, only to ourselves. We become BAD people. How do we become GOOD people? How do we make GOOD people?

Being GOOD takes three simple ingredients – Initiative, Integrity and Compassion.

Initiative. Remember when they say that change will only happen if we start it ourselves? Well it’s legit. This is Tadahiro Kanemasu of Japan. He dresses up as a superhero in a green power-ranger-like-suit while he helps strangers who utilize the Tokyo subway station. The station has dimly lit stairs and has no escalators or elevators, which makes it harder to access specially for elderly people and/or others with heavy luggage. The subway has played a major role in Japan’s continuously progressing economy especially to its citizens’ daily lives. Tadahiro said, “Japanese people find it hard to offer or accept help because they feel indebted to the person,”

Initiative is seeing and acknowledging the problem, and taking the chance to make or be a solution to it; something that most of us disregard as the world continues to progress in material endeavors. We know that people who are in dire need exist, but we refuse to acknowledge that we can be of help and fail to take action. The world badly needs people like Tadahiro Kanemasu.

Integrity. Most of us might think that stories about people returning lost money and/or valuable things are too main-stream and are overrated, and that people who get reported for such deeds desires recognition and payment in return. But we also have to acknowledge that it takes a whole lot of strength to resist the temptation of keeping the money and/or object to you, especially if you yourself are in need of it.

This is Bill Ray Harris, a Missouri homeless man who returned a diamond ring that was dropped in his cup while panhandling on a street in Kansas City. Bill noticed that a woman accidentally dropped a diamond engagement ring in his cup. While he thought of selling the ring he was able to fight the thought and hold onto it in case the woman comes back looking for it.  Three days after, Sarah Darling came to him asking if he had the ring and he then retrieved it from the cup and put it in her finger.

Because of overwhelming gratitude for the homeless man, Sarah and her husband, Bill Krejci launched a fund raiser that hoped to raise $1,000. As the news spread through various social media, they were able to collect more than $190,000 helping Bill own a home and reunite with his family.

Reward aside, Bills’ action proved that holding on to integrity and not allowing the tempting greed take over his decision making results to acts of kindness that brings warmth to the heart and hope to the world that GOOD people exist.

Compassion. “Love and Compassion are necessities, not luxuries” – Dalai Lama.

This is a photo of a man who spent his first salary by sharing it with poor children in a local restaurant in India.

In India , a man shares his first salary by taking poor kids to the restaurant

If we take a look at how the society works right now, it would disagree with the Dalai Lama has said in the quote above. Today, compassion is sold and bought. Today, one does not simply deserve compassion; we even often build up criteria of who deserves it.

This man, while unnamed, proved to us that not only is compassion deserved by everyone but it is also everyone’s capability. It is something that can be shared with open heart and without expectations for anything in return.

In the end, what these stories tell is simple – it doesn’t take a pill or a breakthrough for someone to be GOOD. Whether you are a homeless man, a middle class corporate employee, or a politician, whatever your status may be;it only takes a heart, and the willingness to help. The world is in need of more GOOD people, and there are other stories out there that prove that these people exist and encourage us to be a solution in our very own ways. Let’s make the world a better place, one good deed at a time.

How to Position Your Brand on Twitter

How do you engage your consumers online? Do you value their interests without compromising your company’s brand? Surely, social media brought us into a new way of social talking, to reach million users in split seconds. While online social outlets, such as Twitter allows you to so, it is not enough to bank on merely broadcasting or talking about your brand. Notably, communication involves talking and listening as important primary elements.

Here are 5 ways on how to position your brand on Twitter, being engaging at the same time.

1. Focus on your competencies and interests. Various global brands have now joined and enjoyed the perks of what social media can do – from consumer electronics company like Apple Inc., cosmetic brands like Neutrogena down to small-scale businesses who tries and continuously trying to reach million users on Twitter for potential increase on sales.

Now, how can you increase your followers without spending on expensive advertising or promotion talking on Twitter? As a neophyte in social media, it is undoubtedly a challenge to compete with big companies who have gained large amount of followers compared to yours. Do not worry, there is always a free way to do it.

Twitter allows you to search people events, and even conversations of its users publicly, by default. For example, you type on its search bar, “Where to stay in New York?”. Absolutely, you will see results people looking for hotels for their planned vacation in the city, seeking suggestions and recommendations from their followers. This scenario opens opportunity for your business to engage your target consumers. You are able to check what people need, then creating a leverage point to improve your business.

As you listen to their sentiments in social media, be responsive. Show what you can offer, probably having the most efficient service, big discounts, and promos. Consumers are relational and personal by nature. They love being feel heard and acknowledged.

Sooner or later, you need not to talk much about your brand – consumers will. Once your consumer posted a good feedback about you service on Twitter, this means free advertisement. Followers will know more about your business.

Remember that a friend’s recommendation is more powerful than any advertisement. Dozens of followers have surely read and noticed that tweet open for retweets and favorites, which people can check on their friends’ activity.

Virtual endorsement from your consumers is the best way of brand promotion, by experience.

2. Be consistent. Consistency is the key to success on Twitter. This is authentically the case both for personal accounts and brands, and it comes in two prongs – consistency in the things you say, and consistency in how often you say them.

Certainly, it shows who you are, what and how often you tweet about. It should always be constant. Your power to speak and share thoughts onTwitter is the most essential thing you truly own. It depends on how you say it. It is yours. Nevertheless, if you try to employ your online maneuver differently, then these things won’t matter – as it creates chaos and confusion about your brand. Thus, causes a gradual brand stick.

You also need to be consistent in how often you tweet.

I created my Twitter account in 2010 but only actively used it in 2012. The results is, I never gained relevant increase of followers as it always involves engagement, valuable content and constant tweeting .However, do not overtweet as this might annoy or disrupt your followers leading to unfollowing or blocking your account.

Being consistent does not mean you should be boring. Choice is still yours. People, however, have set their expectations on how you tweet, perhaps all the time. Learn to educate yourself on the customs and norms of the Twitter verse. Be consistent the way you behave.

3. Initiate Engagement With Your Followers. Social networks are not broadcast media. The important questions is what do your consumers like and need. Of course, you will never know what they like in general, so ask. Consider yourself as a consumer, what do you want to read and see on Twitter to join a conversation? A trending topic about Apple’s new iPhone models? A travel promo and package?

One thing your followers will surely care about is simply being who they are. By simply asking, “Are you excited for the weekend?”, you’ll get replies, favorites and RTs.

If you want people to be more interested about your brand, initiate engagement to create true online social dialogue. Engage, don’t broadcast.

4. Be Authentic. You must be as honest and transparent as possible when using social media. Honesty and transparency build a direct relationship between you and your followers, and any deviation from these value can erode brand trust forever.

For small business even huge ones, imperfection about your product in inevitable. However, could be proactively resolved. You can never avoid negative criticisms of bashers on Twitter, it’s virtually impossible to hide the truth. If initially, you have already built good relationship with your followers, they will serve as your defenders to disprove others’ negative comments about you.

If your company, on the other hand is not ready to face the facts about your product or organization, don’t join the conversation yet. Because when you try to employ dishonest tactics in trying to reach consumer, then obviously your brand is slowly losing sight the basic importance of telling the truth.

5. Respond Quickly To All Comments – Good or Bad. What to do if people write and post negative things about your company? Simply, if you’re not ready to respond to negative comments, then don’t. There are indeed inherent negative externalities in social media that we can never get rid of. However, if you are prepared to handle criticisms and respond appropriately and owning a social network community where people can post positive and negative comments could be an asset. Thus, lessening the propensity of hearing it on Twitter where millions can see it.

Embrace what you can’t control. Now, social media comments are the new comment cards. The truth is there is absolutely no way to stop people from bashing you negatively on Twitter. It is only when you try to resolve this type of conflict proactively or efficiently.
